After many false starts, managed to figure out the right way to use a Borders/Waldenbooks gift card to buy books from Borders.
The trouble was, the confusion between an 'amazon shopping cart' and a 'borders shopping cart'.
1. Make sure your amazon shopping cart is empty
2. Sign out of amazon.com
3. Clear your browser cache.
4. Restart your browser.
5. Go to www.borders.com
From there its the usual stuff...
